Sri Aurobindo commenced the composition of his epic poem,
Ilion, whilst in Alipore jail in 1909. He stored vast passages in his extraordinary memory until finally writing them down upon arrival in Pondicherry. What followed was a nine-book epic poem, his second longest after
Savitri, about the final day of the Trojan War.
In the first session, we shall explore the storyline of
Ilion, as well as the Homeric world of the
Iliad and the epic cycle from ancient Greece which influenced this poem. In the second session, we shall explore, in detail, Book 8 of
Ilion: The Book of the Gods. Together we will ascend to Mount Olympus, witness the majestic arrival of the Olympian gods – re-imagined by Sri Aurobindo as vast cosmic powers – and listen to their great council as they deliberate the future evolution of humanity. Across both sessions, we will also explore the remarkable parallels between the great epic traditions of ancient Greece and India, discovering similarities in their myths, gods, heroes, and spiritual vision.
