"This Self is a self of Knowledge, an inner light in the heart; he is the conscious being common to all the states of being and moves in both worlds. He becomes a dream-self and passes beyond this world and its forms of death...when this conscious being sleeps, he becomes luminous with his self-light..." Brihadaranyaka Upanishad (The Life Divine, p. 428).
Our exploration of the Inner consciousness in Part 2 of the series on Conscious Sleep, will focus on the understanding of the 'Dream Self' that Sri Aurobindo writes about in
The Life Divine. This will entail a deeper dive into the workings of the subliminal consciousness, both in waking and in dream states. The subliminal is a "greater dream-builder" than the subconscious (
The Life Divine, p. 440). The experience of dreaming in the subliminal therefore, will be significantly different in nature and more meaningful than dreams of the subconscious.
A not very well-explored area of modern sleep scientists, the Dream Self held a very well-known aspect of Conscious Sleep in
Vedantic texts like the
Upanishads.
This offering is aimed at all spiritual aspirants who seek to know the workings of the inner consciousness at a deeper level in order to open the door to new possibilities.
