ri Aurobindo took daily notes of his personal sadhana in his early years in Pondicherry starting from 1910. These were collected in 2 volumes and published in 2002 under the name, Record of Yoga. Here, we get a glimpse of his own practice and the multi-directional and meticulous nature of it. He explained the scheme to his disciples who were with him at that time. Later he elaborated it in his major Works, often skipping the Sanskrit terms that we find in his diaries. This yoga has 28 seed practices classified in seven groups, which makes it the seven quartets, the “Sapta Chatushtaya”, as Sri Aurobindo called it. The Ashtanga Yoga of Patanjali, the eight limbs with several seed practices within each, is well known in Indian schools of yoga. The Sapta Chatushtaya is a scheme for Integral Yoga and could be adopted by individuals and at yoga schools. It is also the thread that holds the rest of Sri Aurobindo’s works together.
In this workshop, we shall look at the 28 seed concepts, Sri Aurobindo’s diary notes on them, his explanations of the scheme and elaborations of them in his major works. We Shall explore how we can use this knowledge for our own sadhana. We shall also practice some of it.
