Greetings!

We hope our readers have been enjoying our latest issue (Volume VI, Issue 10) with its rich offerings. The issue included some profound excerpts from Sri Aurobindo's work The Life Divine, where he describes in detail the evolutionary crisis that humanity is facing today, a crisis expressing itself in the variety of social-cultural-economic challenges.

A harmonious and fruitful reconciliation is not merely possible but natural and inevitable if only Science and Spirituality, in their extraneous and inessential fortuitous accretions, consent to shed the dead weight of their inhibitions and presumptions. So the Mother has said, anything “that keeps to its proper place and plays its appointed role is helpful, but directly it steps beyond its sphere, it becomes twisted and perverted and therefore false” (CWM, 3: 33)

Indeed, as we shall see in the course of our essay, much of the conflict between Science and Religion is solely due to this overstepping of respective spheres and is therefore devoid of any veritable raison d’etre. But before we may arrive at the reconciling solution, we propose first to analyse the reasons, historical as well as metaphysical, that have tended to put Science and Spirituality in two opposite camps; for a problem clearly put and squarely faced often brings its own solution.

The Next Stage in the Human Progress
(Editorial - Beloo Mehra)

Editor’s Note: Sri Aurobindo writes, “the hope of the world lies in the re-arousing in the East of the old spiritual practicality and large and profound vision and power of organisation under the insistent contact of the West” (CWSA, 13: 137-138). The coming together of “spiritual practicality” of India with the West’s power of organisation will yield new forms of action, force and influence which can help humanity advance further.

Editor’s Note: Science now acknowledges the transcendental dimension of existence, thereby confirming what the Mystics have said since ages. Sri Aurobindo emphasises that after all the advancement humanity has made in the material domain, the next state in the human progress is definitely a spiritual and psychical advance. Thus, it becomes essential that more and more sections of humanity develop an inward orientation to seeking truth.

This necessitates nurturing and cultivating an innate sense of wonder and deeper quest for knowing the hidden truths of existence and life. This is the work we must do to prepare ourselves as collaborators in the work of bringing a new age based on the New Spiritual Ideal that Sri Aurobindo and the Mother have given us.

With this in consideration, we feature in the current issue a book review by Dr. Ramesh Bijlani from Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Delhi Branch. He reviews the book titled The Religion of Wonder written by Narendra Murty (published by Auropublications, Sri Aurobindo Society). This review was first published in The Call Beyond, vol. 50, no. 4 (April 2025) and is being republished with their permission.
