‘The Four Aids’ as Pillars of Integral Yoga Practice

‘The purpose of yoga’ Sri Aurobindo says (The Synthesis of Yoga) is, “…. to compress one’s evolution into a single life or even a few years.”He prescribes ‘The Four Aids’ as the method to be used to gain the perfection required. The Four Aids in Integral Yoga, apart from compressing evolution, also fulfil the objective of “All life is yoga” because it harmonises the subconscious yoga in Nature with the conscious yoga in man, so that the two merge (subjective and objective fulfilment) in luminous consummation.

Yogic perfection is brought about with the use of ‘four great instruments’ – Shastra, or knowledge of Truth, Utsaha, or persistent action, along the lines of the knowledge gained, Guru, the example and influence of the teacher and lastly, Kala, the instrument of Time.

Exploring in detail some aspects of these four aids and their consequence on the practice of Integral Yoga, we shall rely on the reading, understanding, and unfolding of each method in the workshop, through examples and practice.
