 विप्रवचन – Our Authors & Their Words
From the Editor's Desk

“One learns things better if one writes them.”
(The Mother, CWM 17: 146)

This monthly newsletter features a selected author from Renaissance, with links to two or three of his or her writings. This will help our readers stay acquainted with the richness of the content we regularly feature. As we bring this newsletter, we are also conscious of Sri Aurobindo’s important reminder -

“There should be no ‘desire’ to be a ‘great’ writer. If there is a genuine inspiration or coming of a power to write, then it can be done but to use it as a means of service to the Divine is the proper spirit.” (14 May 1934).

K. D. Sethna (1904–2011), known by his spiritual name Amal Kiran ("Clear Ray"), was a distinguished disciple of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother, as well as a poet, scholar, and philosopher. A member of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram from 1927, he was one of its most prolific writers, producing works on spiritual evolution, the Supramental transformation, and the Mother’s Grace. K. D. Sethna also served as the long-time editor of Mother India, contributing deeply to the ashram’s literary and spiritual heritage. In this edition, we feature his reflections on the Supramental Manifestation of 1956, offering insights into his personal experiences of the Mother’s transformative power.

K. D. Sethna (Amal Kiran) shares powerful stories of the Mother’s Grace, reflecting her divine intervention in pivotal moments of his life. These reminiscences, tied to the Supramental Manifestation of February 29, 1956, offer a window into Sethna’s deep spiritual experiences.

Amal Kiran writes:

There is a lot of “I” in these reminiscences. But that is an unavoidable accident. For, they are penned not because of the person to whom certain things occurred: they are penned because of these things themselves. And if the person has any significance it is that he serves to set off all the more the incalculable play of Grace from the Karmic Law of Deserved Returns.

In this article, we found a perfect gem by K. D. Sethna (named Amal Kiran by Sri Aurobindo). This piece highlights the vast, integral being of Sri Aurobindo, the Rishi, as well as the greatly endearing personality of Sri Aurobindo, the modern Guru. We also get a glimpse of life in the early years of Sri Aurobindo Ashram.

Amal Kiran writes:

I was at college when I first heard of Sri Aurobindo.

I read somewhere that he was a master of English as well as familiar with several other languages both ancient and modern. I also learnt that he was a great Yogi who had the power to appear in many places at the same time!

“The art of good writing consists in knowing how to be silent. The things you don’t say are far more important than the things you do.”

( The Mother’s Agenda, 2: 388)
